Accommodation

Firstly your apartment could be anything up to the 7th floor in a 7 storey apartment building – great you say; good views! Downside is – no lift!! Still you save on gym membership.

Secondly your bathroom – if you are lucky you will have a step-in shower. If not you will still have a shower in the Italian style. No shower curtain, so everything in the bathroom gets soaking wet. (We were lucky, very good bathroom)

Thirdly; your kitchen – no oven or grill available. However you will have a microwave, fridge, etc. plus a 2 burner gas stove, one burner which is very fast especially for woks. As I am a keen cook and like to make our own bread, bought a small toaster oven as most of the Westerners we know here also did. Allows you to bake, toast, roast etc. Works very well.

Fourthly and very important – the beds are very hard, even with innerspring mattresses, so be prepared.

Basic implements and crockery and cutlery, wok, saucepan are supplied. Depends very much on which apartment you get. Ours did not have very much so we bought a few items. Ordinary table knives are very difficult to find, however chopsticks are very plentiful and cheap. Everything here is very inexpensive plus it is a good way to find your way around your new town. One item I will definitely bring back for our next contract is my Bamix stick blender as the 240V system and plugs are the same as Australia. There are plenty of electrical items available but basic stick blenders are difficult to find in Yichang.

Remember the old proverb 'a stitch in time saves nine', well non existent here, when you see the paint job and cabling methods in your apartment.

Whilst Yichang is a very pleasant place to live, it is a provincial city and many western items are not available here. There are many parks and gardens, and lots of trees in the city areas. Also a very nice children’s park with a lake and amusement rides, pottery wheels, and a small zoo.
