Foreign Language Village

This is where a number of the English teachers go to every Sunday night at 6:30 for two hours. It is part of the Foreign Language faculty and is run by the English majors. Village consists of a bank where you exchange RMB's for "Village" money; a coffee shop where students and teachers can get together over a drink to chat. There are various other "shops" - fashion, supermarket, photographer, psychiatrist, entertainment & games, language centre, and food preparation demonstration (and tasting!)
The idea is that students only speak English, and "police" patrol the area to enforce this rule. Foreign teachers are mainly involved in the language and psychiatrist areas so students can come and discuss their problems - which are many and varied. Main theme of problems is that they worry about speaking English to foreigners in case they make mistakes.
Although I have done a couple of sessions in both Language and Psychiatrist, my main area has been the food prep. area. One session consisted of cooking a Western style main meal and teaching students (and a couple of teachers) to use a knife and fork. Following sessions included various types of muffins, mini pizzas and rice pudding. All were extremely well received! All students were very happy to talk with us.
